Thursday, March 13, 2003 - Visit to the Shrine of "San Miguel del Milagro" and to the Shrine of "Our Lady of Ocatlan".

 

 

 

 

 

 

Shrine of San Miguel del Milagro in Nativitas is 17 kilometers away from Tlaxcala - It is here that St. Michael the Archangel appeared to "Diego Lazaro de San Francisco" in 1631 indicating to him where the holy water would appear.

The main altar is a golden masterpiece at whose center is Our Lady of Ocotlan carved from a single piece of wood (ocote).  The Shrine of Ocotlan is one the most beautiful Colonial jewels in Mexico.

 

Shrine of "Our Lady of Ocatlan" - Built between 1760 and 1790 (mortar and brick)  in the barroque style.  Below a panoramic view of the Shrine.

The "Capilla del Pocito de Agua Santa" - Chapel of the Well of the Holy Water - built in 1896 is found 400 meters away from the Shrine of Ocotlan.  It was here that the Virgin Mary appeared before the indian Juan Diego Bernardino and revealed to him the spring whose healing waters he used to cure those afflicted with the plague.
